I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up

If you have been reading this article for very long then you know that in November of last year I made some pretty bold statements about my weight. 2021 has been a year of some changes for me.
You might not know it by looking at me (because trying to lose weight in your late 40’s is like watching paint dry…slow and painful) but I have been trying some things that are, well, new to me to say the least.
And working out is one of those things.
Y’all. I wish you could be there to see me.
I am beyond uncoordinated.
I cannot follow directions.
The maximum weight I can lift is between 5-8 pounds.
I don’t believe in “reps.”
And I curse. A lot.
It’s a sight to behold, I assure you.
But for me, the biggest problem was not the difficulty during the class. It was what happened after. After I got home. After I ate dinner. After I soaked in Epsom salts for an hour. After I tried walking the next morning.
I couldn’t!
I hurt everywhere and all the time. They say that the soreness would subside, but it didn’t. My knees sounded like popcorn when I walked. I had to pray that God would help me dry my hair because my arms hurt so bad. And I’m pretty sure my chiropractor got to add tennis courts to his house due to my lower back problems.
Eventually going to the gym made me more depressed than energized. I missed the classes, but I abhorred the pain. Have you found this to be the case? Someone please talk to me about this issue because I certainly don’t want to give up working out, but I’ve taken a good long look at the classes I was choosing to go to and I may have bitten off more than I can chew. Which left me sad, mad and feeling like I had failed.
Then, I discovered Openfit (https://openfit.com/MRADKE). I downloaded the Openfit app and immediately saw class after class after class that met my abilities where they were at (as limited as they might be). I could tell my body was getting stronger, but not “jump down and give me 20 burpees” stronger, but thankfully, that was never the case for this app.
If one day I needed to take it easy and just do some light stretching, they offered it! If some days I felt stronger and knew I could go a little harder, I’d try barre or kickboxing. Those days are few and far between, still. (Give me some time, Jillian Michaels!)
And then there were days when I just wanted to walk; not run, not kick, not “hit it hard” or “grind it out” – just. simply. walk. Which was awesome because they had programs I could follow that helped me do just that!
Have you ever gone on an evening walk with your fighting kids and your husband who just wants to discuss a budget? It’s not that great. My sweet family is 4 reasons why I want to stop walking the minute I get started. So, I pull up my Openfit app and go to Every Step; these are walking classes. Not that I need to learn how to walk, but I sure as heck need some motivation to keep doing it.
I can do a 20-minute class or an hour, I can do killer music or I can do a coach that keeps me motivated. Not that David Radke saying things like “We have to cut back on more than just dry cleaning, Melissa” is not a great motivator, because it ISN’T. But at least at the end of my Every Step class I feel like I have accomplished something that isn’t murder. High Five!
I am not where I want to be, anyone looking at me can see this. But I am soooooo much further along than I was even three months ago. I can feel it…little by little…workout by workout…day by day.
This summer a lot of things happened in our family and making it to the gym every morning was not in the cards for us. It was important to me though that I still move, even in some small way. Openfit allowed me to do that. I worked out in my home. On my schedule.
You know I am always your girl for what movie I just saw and loved, what tv show is doing it for me, what recipe my family is talking about, what new face product that is paying off, so I felt it was only fair to let you all know about this app. For a woman who can sometimes do a 45 minute class, but usually has to do a 20 minute one, this is the hands-down winner for me and I wanted you all to know!
I know it’s hard. AND I KNOOOOOOOOW it’s hot. But keep moving. One of these days we will wake up – and we will not hurt. I can’t wait for that.
Melissa

Melissa I’m reading this on the stationary bike at my church gym. Haven’t exercised since Bush was in office, I’ll let you guess which one. But I went to my doctor yesterday and felt like I needed to just go ahead and plan my funeral so I gotta do something. Thanks for the honesty and the info.
I'M PROUD OF YOU! I, like you, struggle with dropping the weight. I've made progress, but I'm not where I want to be. The key is to keep going and to try new things. When I was younger I would go to the gym for a couple of hours several times a week. I don't have that kind of time anymore and, if I'm being honest, I don't want to spend my time there. I'd rather have the flexibility of something like Open Fit (I might drop my Beachbody and make the switch) where I can mix it up. Like you said, if I'm at least moving then I'm making progress right? Working out, dieting, fitness etc is not a one size fits all. You have to find what works best for you. Keep going and just know you've got a community of people out here cheering you on. Much love! - Michelle
