March in Review
Best movie we saw…
I’m not quite sure what movie I saw in March that would be considered “the best.” I saw Windfall (Netflix) and really enjoyed that one. But many I have spoken to didn’t care for it. I’m weird.
Did it compare to The Lost City? NO. Does anything compare to Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s behind? No. She’s America’s Sweetheart for crying out loud. And he’s America’s…hottest dad. We went to go see it with our best friends and I’m so glad we did. It was funny and cute and charming and we all loved it. But I will make this disclaimer: I did not think they had a lot of chemistry. Did you?? I saw her kiss Bill Pullman in While You Were Sleeping and imma tell you right now - she meant that kiss. But her chemistry with Channing Tatum felt forced to me.
But I will take this moment to talk about another movie in March that was voted “the best.” The Best Picture Oscar went to Coda and for once in a very long time I believe Hollywood got it right. That movie!!!! When was the last time a movie that had no sex and no brutal murder scenes won an Academy Award? My entire family sat down and watched it and we (even Rocco) loved it. If you want a feel good, teary eyed, family love story, go watch Coda on Apple TV.
Best TV we watched…
I have finally talked David into watching Breaking Bad (Netflix.) Can you believe the man has never watched it? But he ended up liking Better Call Saul so much that he decided he needed to check it out. Man that show is slow moving through season 1 and 2. But halfway through season 3 it becomes a fast moving meth train and it never slows down. He’s hooked! Just like I told him he would be in 2015. Men.
When we first saw Jack Reacher (Prime) advertised we weren’t one but interested. We love action and we looooove Jack Ryan (also on Prime) - but Jack Ryan this was not. So we judged a book by its cover and moved on. Until everyone and their dog told us it was good. So, we took another look and I am so glad we did. Now granted, Jack Reacher looks like he was voted the Worlds Best Mimbo; he looks big and handsome and like a male bimbo. But we ended up loving him! And the show! It’s got action and a good story line and he is actually a great Jack Reacher. And this goes to show you that David and I are awful people and we judge others by their good looks and swagger. We humbly apologize.
Best thing we ate…
March was spring break for our kids here in East Texas. They wanted to do something so badly but us Radke’s, we are on a budget right now, so their flights of fancy weren’t even considered. Poor, mistreated, budget babies. Of course, their grandpa heard their cry. Grandparents, aren’t they the best? We all went to Houston for a little getaway and ended up at one of the best restaurants I have eaten at in many years.
If you are in or around the area - or if you have one near you (I’m talking to you Philly, Chicago & Charlotte) I highly suggest you check out Steak48. Now hear me! That meal cost more than our mortgage, which is why it was the grandparents treat. (I’m no fool.) I literally had a bite of every single person’s plate that night (don’t you hate people like me) and there was not one thing I tasted that was not absolutely delicious. Oh my word, check it out and bury me there.
I would like to leave you with a hilarious happening. David Radke loves steak. He loves steak more than he loves me and the kids and the Astros, combined. But on that particular night he ordered the Chilean Seabass because he gave up red meat for Lent. He was shook. I thought he was going to openly weep when they sat Rocco’s filet down on the table. But he didn’t budge and he didn’t give in. I was proud of him. The next night, we were home from our trip and back to our budgeting ways. He was two bowls into my spaghetti and meatballs before he realized he had eaten red meat. He didn’t eat it at Steak48. He ate it at home. Smothered in Ragu. He loves Jesus but he did cuss that night.
Best meal I cooked…
So look, I’m a great cook. But I am a horrible baker. When it comes to brownies and cookies and pies and cakes… I suck. I do. I can admit this. Everything falls flat, or it burns, or it’s completely doughy in the middle. I just cannot seem to get it right. Until last week. I made chocolate chip cookies for my kids and I thought they were going to die. “These are the best you’ve ever made,” “please make some more,” “these are our favorite cookies now,” I’m telling you I got all the raves. Little did they know it was a dozen unbaked cookies from Tiff’s Treats, delivered fresh to my doorstep. They saw me pulling them out of the oven, hot and fresh, and assumed I had made them. And I have let them assume that since then. Why burst their adorable little bubble? The fact that food can now be delivered to our home and passed off as ours? Did you ever think we’d reach this day?? Thank you, God! *Check out the new book, It’s Not Just Cookies, by Tiffany and Leon and get FREE Tiff’s Treat cookies!
Did you see my video on my egg salad? My recipe was simple…
6 boiled eggs
1 cup Dukes Mayo.
2 tbsps. Gulden’s Spicy Brown mustard
Paprika
Salt & pepper to taste
Some of you told me to fancy it up by adding bacon. And someone suggested putting chips literally ON my sandwich. Whaaaaa? I’ll be making it like this for the next half of my life.
Best piece of advice…
Easter is coming up in many of us will be sitting down to a big bowl of mashed potatoes, because what else goes with Easter ham? Want to know how to fancy up what can be a fairly boring bowl of mashed potatoes? FRENCH ONION DIP. No, this doesn’t mean to make anything new. Go to the grocery store and literally buy a tub of French onion dip. I like the cold ones best that come in the refrigerated section. I simply mix the dip in to my taste. Sometimes I add the whole 16 oz tub, sometimes I go for a more subtle taste - up to you. But it does give them a rich, creamy, garlicky taste that both unexpected and delicious.
Love ya. Mean it.
