Someone in my house is shedding.
I got in the shower the other day and assumed someone had tried to put our cat down the drain. But nope, just hair. Just a glorious wad of hair that everyone in the family leaves for THE MOM to clean out. One day, David got out of the shower and said, “That hair in the drain is making me sick.”
Did he do something about it?
Nope.
Unless you call leaving it for me doing something about it.
In the Radke house we have one shower. (Come quickly Jesus!) The previous owners felt like sitting in a tepid pool of their own filth was the best alternative to cleaning ones self. So we have a couple of bathtubs - but one shower. And guess where it is? MY BATHROOM. That’s right, morning after morning there is a March right into mom and dad’s bathroom so that everyone can get their shower.
One guess who gets the last slot and all the cold water they can handle. I’ll wait while you figure it out.
So, each morning I am left with a wad of hair the size of my golden retriever. Clearly it must be coming from one of them, right?
But they cry foul! They say that the wad of hair has always been there and that it’s mine and that I don’t notice it because it is coming off during my shower. Is that possible? Are they right? Could I be losing that much hair?
I will admit that I never noticed this problem until the last six months or so and that just happens to be when I went darker on my hair. Could it be that I have been losing hair all along and just never knew it because it was so blonde?
That’s what my family claims, but they’re idiots so what do they know.
I say it’s Remi.
When I was growing up, my best friend, Nicolle, had a shedding problem. She shed in the shower. She shed in the bed. She would be swimming and when she’d come up from the water hair would be floating in the pool. (Of course it was the 80’s so no one cared or bothered to cleaned it out.) After she’d leave my house my mom would spend an hour, literally, circling the drain. That’s how much Nikki shed! But it didn’t matter because she was Cajun and had more hair than she knew what to even do with. (Also, I have no clue what that has to do with being Cajun but I think it matters.)
I told Remi that it’s okay to shed. I told her about Nicolle and how she isn’t bald today in fact she has beautiful, thick hair.
“Nice try,” she said. “Nice try with your sweet story about your childhood friend. But it’s you. It’s not me.”
“No, it’s definitely you. I even see it in the sink where we brush our teeth.”
“HA! I don’t brush my teeth in your bathroom!”
Oh crap.
She barely brushes her teeth in her bathroom - much less, mine!
My dear friends, I am going to say something to you that I am embarrassed to say because it is prideful and I pride myself on not being a prideful person. But, my hair is my glory. It’s always been the ONE THING on my body that I could work with.
My upper arms were my enemy.
My thighs clearly hated me.
My knees quit being any assistance to me in 2001.
My skin was no help.
And my weight sucked.
But my hair? It was thick and it would do whatever I told it to.
And now. Here I am. Mid-40’s. And even my hair is wimping out on me.
What’s next? My lower back? Oh wait....(Insert sobs!) 😭
Have you had this issue? I am currently on a Thyroid pill but am thinking I might need to up that sucker. Because right now I am three showers away from going as Bruce Willis on Halloween.
Shedding and hair loss can come from a variety of reasons, I know. Eating differently and not getting your normal intake of vitamins and nutrients can also be a huge factor. If you are experiencing this, that’s okay. Just look at what you’re eating and know that that may be the cause. It may also be your thyroid. Maybe it’s stress from your job. It may also be your children drive you crazy and you’ve taken to pulling your hair out in your sleep. I don’t know! Maybe it’s all of those things for me. I am eating very differently right now, I am stressed about some things in my job and everyone knows my kids are pretty bad....
Have you had this happen to you?
Have you ever stepped in the shower and thought you saw one of Kim Kardashians wigs in your drain?
If so, tell us about it, and tell us what you did to fix it. Because if I ever wanna be able to afford a new shower put in my house - I can’t start buying Raquel Welch wigs!
Love,
Melissa
So I have had several things in my life that have caused hair loss. Luckily one of my Diva sisters is a hair stylist and has helped me through each time. First time was when I got pregnant with my child not huge hair loss, but lost all the wave to my hair and it went almost completely straight. Second time was large weight loss. This time it was significant. Used Nioxin at that point and I actually stopped losing so much hair(didn't completely stop it, but definitely helped), it also stimulated new growth. Then came menopause and a hysterectomy. (Yes by now you can guess I am old) Hormones completely out of wack and although I continue to lose hair, I also have new hair growth, but hate the sprigs. Also I am thinking of starting a new business of facial hair growth harvesting to make wigs. (Hormones are a wicked thing) So this time around she has suggested Zenagen. Keep the stories coming, they always bring a smile to my face and so much to relate to.
While I agree that you probably need to have your meds adjusted, a few years ago I had the same problem. A shedding cat had nothing on the hands full of hair that was cleaned up everyday. At that time I was also having some heart issues and working with a cardiologist. He told me to add 1 small or half of a large avocado to my diet everyday to help with cholesterol control . After a few days I noticed the shedding stopped. Now if I miss my avocado for several days I am back to shedding. So avocado toast for breakfast is my go to now. I am 66 yrs old and my hair is thicker than when I was in my 20's.
